For most drivers, passing through a series of green lights one after the other is the happiest thing in the driving experience. Audi is now updating its embedded traffic light reading technology to help users capture the mysterious "green waves" more accurately. Audi said the new feature is Green Light Optimized Speed Advisory or GLOSA, which tells drivers how to adjust the speed to reduce red-light parking waiting time.

Some 2017 and 2018 Audi models have built-in similar infrastructure technologies that allow them to receive information from a centralized traffic light management system via a built-in 4G LTE hotspot. Essentially, the sensor mounted on the traffic light "talks" to the car, telling it how long it takes for the red light to turn green.
Using traffic signal information and the current location of the vehicle, the Audi owner will now see the speed recommendations displayed on the screen behind the steering wheel. The distance from the signal, the speed limit of the area in which it is located, and the time of the particular traffic signal are used to calculate the speed recommendations displayed to the driver.
According to survey data from the American Transportation Safety Association (AAA), ordinary American drivers spend nearly 300 hours a year waiting for a red light. Providing additional information to the driver, such as a green light-optimized speed warning, can help reduce anxiety and improve driver comfort during driving.
The car manufacturer first released the technology in Las Vegas in 2016 and deployed it to more than 4,700 intersections in cities across the United States, including Dallas, Denver, Gainesville, Houston, Kansas City, and Las Vegas. Gass, Los Angeles, New York, Orlando, Phoenix, Portland, San Francisco, and Washington DC.
