The Russian legislature today approved a draft law prohibiting military personnel from using smartphones and social networks to prevent national military information from being leaked. The Russian State Duma announced today on Twitter that the draft law has been approved. Under the new law, military personnel will be prohibited from posting information about themselves or their colleagues on the Internet, not using smart devices, and not allowing audio or photo, video or geographic location data to be recorded or distributed.

For years, the Russian government has been trying to block security holes in the military. It is reported that these loopholes have exposed Russia’s preparations for entering Syria.

For officers and soldiers who violate the relevant new regulations, the Russian military may prematurely retire. In addition, ordinary mobile phones without a camera will not be disabled, and military personnel can still use their smartphones while they are not on duty.
