How to connect SuperDrive to unsupported Mac models
Apple SuperDrive is an external CD / DVD drive that can read and write optical discs. It works with most Mac models, but not all. It does not support Mac computers with a built-in drive. By connecting an external drive to an unsupported device, you will see an error message.
Before you give up, try using a special command with which you can connect Superdrive to any Mac. The method we will discuss below should help you.
The way is to modify nvram using the command line, and it is suitable only for users with sufficient skills. As usual, proceed with caution and at your own risk. Also, do not forget to keep backups of your device.

How to connect SuperDrive to an unsupported Mac

  1. Save a backup of your Mac with Time Machine or some other method.
  2. Open the Terminal program in Utilities.
  3. Type the following command:
     sudo nvram boot-args = "mbasd = 1"
  4. Press Return (Enter) and enter the administrator password.
  5. Close the Terminal.
  6. Turn off the Mac.
  7. Connect Apple SuperDrive to your Mac with USB after it turns off.
  8. Turn Now SuperDrive should work.
This method should activate SuperDrive support on models where it was not originally available, but it does not work in all cases.
If you want to undo the changes, you need to return the default nvram settings. You can reset PRAM / NVRAM during computer startup or manually clean the nvram using the command line. Both options must return the original settings.
According to Apple, SuperDrive works with the following Mac models:
  • MacBook Pro with Retina display (new models require USB-C adapter)
  • MacBook Air
  • iMac (end of 2012) and newer
  • Mac mini (end of 2009) and newer
  • Mac Pro (end of 2013)
